I was mugged one year at knife point by two teenage boys in Highbury Fields, a park I used to walk through to get home late at night after teaching.
It was very silly of me, I realised after the event, but I'd taken that route for years, many times a week, as an evening teacher, and forgotten that times had changed, that it wasn't as safe anymore. They'd approached me from behind.
After that, I stopped taking the Tube home, as it entailed that walk through Highbury Fields, and kept to main roads as much as I could.
Still, for months afterwards, I'd jump instinctively in fright and my heart would miss a beat whenever I heard footsteps behind me, even in broad daylight and with people around everywhere.
This is the 心有餘悸 / 心有余悸 effect.
