Heard in the 70s about a Brit going to Spain on holiday who was told by a friend to try pigeon as the Spanish eat it (not available here in Britain).
When in Spain, he tried to get the name for pigeon in Spanish, not having done his homework earlier. As he was in/near a church, he pointed at the dove in the stained glass window and asked a local what it was called in Spanish. He was duly given the Spanish version for it.
When the waiter came to take his order at the restaurant, the Brit ordered an “espiritu santo” — which was what the local man told him.
It means “holy spirit”.
