Old Italian friend who’s in Rome visiting his mother (aged 99+) reported on Friday:

Today there's a "general strike" of public transportation in Rome (and Italy in general). Such things are routine here. But, the strike doesn't start until 8:30am! That I found actually funny.
So I am going to see my mother at this very early time, before the strike begins.
Strikes in Italy are very conscientious. That's what I found funny because it tells a lot about Italian culture (I think). People shout and fight and hurl insults at each other but then in reality they will help you if you need it. So the striking workers are worried that people need to go to work in the morning. So the strike doesn't start until 8:30 so people have a chance to get to work!
Then there will be another interruption of the strike around 5:00 so people can get back home...

Maybe it's a spirit that British transport strikers can learn from.

Hahahaha, that’s very sweet but [in principle] it defeats the purpose of striking which is to cause as much inconvenience and disruption as possible so that the strikers get their demands met.
Hahahaha.

Me: So it sort of amounts to the strikers taking a short mid-winter break…
Friend: Without pay...
