My then-student David (from Ireland) used to have a very heavy cold, I thought. I felt sorry for the poor man, having a perpetual cold.
Then, one day, when I still had a TV set, I heard an Irish reporter and realised that it's actually the nasal Irish accent — which then made me realise why a lot of Americans speak with a strong nasal accent (because so many of them are of Irish descent).
