My supervisor told me this true story about a lecturer at SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London) in the 60s or 70s (I think).
The lecturer felt that he deserved being promoted to a senior lectureship, so he decided to approach the Director about this.
Before then, however, he went to the bar to seek some supply of confidence and courage. (I see on Google that the saying “Dutch courage” might be perceived as offensive to/by the Dutch.)
As he stepped into the Director’s office, he tripped over the threshold — splat, all sprawled out on the floor in front of the Director’s desk.
Making the best of his prone position, he pounded his fist on the floor and said, “I demand to be made a Senior Lecturer!”
