Not authentic enough (London)

I took an English friend from SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) days, Simon, to the Indian YMCA canteen for lunch one year.

Simon had travelled around India for a while after he graduated from SOAS in 1980.

The moment he walked in, he sniffed the air, and said, "OH!  This smells just like India!"

Then, when he started to tuck into his chicken curry dish, he said, "No, it's not authentic enough — there's too much meat on the chicken…!"

(London, 1982? / 1983?)

  1. Simon still loves a proper ‘mucky’ curry, but has to go to Bradford (from Worcester) to get it!

  2. Next time you come to London, I'll take you to Indian Veg (yes, that's the name) in Chapel Market. Vegetarian buffet, nice staff, whacky decor inside, always quiet for lunch, no corkage for BYOB. Used to be a fiver some 30 years ago, and stayed that way for a long time. It's now £12. Can linger for as long as you want, so it's a good place for long conversations or a work discussion meal, but not if you want a more vibrant atmosphere (which for me is too noisy).
